Grand et

Petit Bé

SAINT-MALO

Today’s walk takes us to the two small tidal islands that lie just off the city walls of Saint-Malo: Grand Bé and Petit Bé.

***

The Promenade des Bés is still slightly submerged, and we have to wait a moment before we can set off.

Once the tide has gone out and cleared the way, you can walk to the small islands with dry feet.

In addition to interesting vegetation, this spot also offers an exceptional view toward Saint-Malo and Fort National.

***

Unfortunately, the fortifications on Grand Bé can now only be vaguely discerned. During the Second World War, the German Wehrmacht installed artillery pieces and anti-aircraft guns there; these were subsequently destroyed as a result of American artillery fire and air raids on the city.

Flora and fauna have reclaimed the island.

„Passant, respektiere seinen letzten Wunsch!“

On the northern part of the island lies the grave of François-René de Chateaubriand, a French writer and diplomat. In accordance with his wishes, he was laid to rest on Grand Bé in 1848. The side of the grave facing the sea was left open. The tomb bears no inscription; however, a plaque on the rear wall carries the following words:
"A great French writer wished to rest here, hearing nothing but the wind and the sea."
A part of this message is also addressed to us:
“Passerby, respect his final wish!”

We head back toward the south side. It is time to set off for Petit Bé, and we take one last moment to enjoy the view.

The fort was constructed under the direction of the engineer Siméon Garangeau. It consists of a large gun platform and a blockhouse with two flanking bastions. Approximately 160 soldiers and 19 cannons were stationed there. Together with the Fort Harbour Dinard, it allowed for attackers in the Rance estuary to be caught in a crossfire.

***

As the signs warn, you must always keep an eye on the tide schedule when visiting the two islands. A good rule of thumb is that if the water reaches within 10 meters of the paved path, it is too late to head back to the mainland. There is a dangerous current that could sweep you away.
